Debbie Bemis

I was one of those kids who always knew I wanted to be in teaching.  I spent hours playing school as a kid. When I learned sign language in the fourth grade with my best friend who was Deaf, I knew I wanted to use it in my teaching career.

I am a graduate of San Diego State University and received my Masters in Deaf Education from San Jose State.  I started working for the Santa Clara County Office of Education in 1986, and I have been with the Deaf Program since that time: as an aide, an interpreter, and a teacher, then finally settling into my role as counselor, where I have been since 1989.  As the counselor for the program, I serve Deaf and Hard of Hearing students at Oster Elementary School and Dartmouth Middle School in addition to the DHH students at Leigh High School.

I enjoy travelling, hiking with my dogs, reading, being around children, and music.  I have played the flute for over 50 years and continue to play for enjoyment. I also play in a Bell Choir and sing in a regular choir.   Life is short, and I do my best to enjoy each day!
