We are pleased to invite you to join us for a parent night with highly regarded Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Professor of Counseling Psychology, Dr. Jerrold Lee Shapiro.
There will be two primary goals explored during this workshop - Reducing anxiety about the college application process and developing a strategy to be most effective during what can be a trying time.
The advent of a child leaving home to go to college is a significant and important marker in the life of a family. Unfortunately, we generally have few methods, strategies or rituals in place to guide us through this transition. What we do have is a lot of anxiety, procrastination and a general lack of useful information amid a glut of rumors, outdated information and partial knowledge.
Often, High School Juniors and Seniors handle their anxiety about college choice and application by using well-honed avoidance skills. In this brief workshop, we will deal with the reality, rather than the myths of college selection. Parents will learn how to understand some important informational and emotional concerns of their college bound children.
Specific methods, techniques and strategies will be offered to help your child maximize her/his chances of getting into the right school for their post-secondary education and future career. These include steps that parents can take to help their child/client through the process. The role of anxiety and the ways in which it aids and blocks good decision making will be explained along with effective strategies for parents.
The essential notion of “fit” of college and student is presented and parents will be tuned into the wide range of schools that don’t necessarily have the most familiar names. Issues such as your child’s style of learning, level of independence, personality, finances, best ambiance in a school for an individual student, special needs, campus visits and diversity will be explored.
Real life examples will be used and there will be time, at the beginning and end of the presentation for parents’ questions about the process.
In addition to being a Professor at Santa Clara University, Dr. Shapiro is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and has been working with parents and families for over four decades and has been a college professor for 47 years.
